Specialty Drift Diving


Here you will learn the special features of diving in waters with currents.

Training content

In the Drift Diving specialty you will learn the theory and practice of safe planning, preparation and execution of drift dives.

Theoretical training

  • Development of flow and flow types
  • Tidal and wind influences
  • Tide table
  • Recognizing and assessing flow
  • Planning drift dives
  • Direction of dives with current
  • Safety precautions (e.g. flow line)
  • Arrangements with the skipper (e.g. dinghy, emergency signals)

Practical training

  • Determining the current before the dive from the boat and in the water
  • Start dives against the current
  • Search for flow shadows
  • Recognize the time difference between diving with and against the current
  • Drift with the current on the surface to the boat
  • Pick up from the inflatable boat at a predetermined location
  • Drift dive with boat escort (and use of buoys)

Prerequisites

  • Minimum age 12 years old
  • Proof of Open Water Diver or comparable
  • Proof of health status
  • For minors, a declaration of consent from a parent or legal guardian is required
